To understand how the internet works we must first understand protocols. Simply put a protocol allows the exchange of information between electronic items such as laptops, desktops, mobile phones, etc. In computing terms, a protocol or communication protocol is a set of rules in which computers communicate with each other. The protocol says what part of the conversation comes at which time. It also says how to end the communication. Internet protocol is responsible for addressing, sending and receiving the data packets over the Internet. The red line in this illustration represents the protocol or connection between two computers through the internet, this is called an Internet Protocol or IP for short. This is a simplified diagram as the data will relay through multiple computers connected online before reaching its final destination. You may have heard “TCP IP” before, TCP stands for “Transmission Control Protocol” which is responsible for breaking data down into small packets before it can be set over a network, and for assembling the packets again when it arrives.
